The Hillside Project... a fire-safe zero energy, sustainable home The Hillside Project is an exclusive contemporary residential dwelling which has been built at 40 Hawker Avenue, Belair, South Australia, over 2009-2011. The location is perfect... the 2,941 square metre property fronts onto the magnificent Mount Lofty Ranges, with extensive views over the Adelaide coast. The night lights of southern Adelaide and Glenelg are spectacular.
Whilst enjoying a temperate climate, Hillside is exposed to gully winds and cold winter temperatures. With hot, dry summers and cold, gusty winters, the challenge is to create an energy efficient house with a comfortable environment, requiring minimal heating and cooling, whilst maximising the views to the West. |

Project Objective
The objective was for Hillside to be a showcase of what can be achieved in energy and fire efficiency, given the compromises of a West-facing block. It is the ultimate - the 'rolls royce'of luxury new home design. |

Built to survive fire...Fronting on to the dry bush of the Mt Lofty Ranges, Hillside has been built to withstand fire. Precast concrete, together with a CSIRO fire-tested window system have been used, together with measures such as fire retardant landscaping, gutter guards, roof sprinklers, and ample water for fire fighting will ensure that the house is well positioned in a fire. |

Benefits of off-site manufacture
Hillside's entire structure (precast sandwich panels, window systems, structural steel and roof trusses) has been manufactured in purpose-built factories, then delivered to site and craned into position. Off-site manufacture has long been recognised both in Australia and internationally, as offering numerous benefits to all parties in sustainable construction. Off-site manufacture offers better quality control (meaning less defects), easier waste recycling because manufacture is in one place, more efficient site processes (with less clutter and activity on site), better control of health and safety, more environmentally friendly manufacture (with minimal waste, fewer deliveries, reduced noise and less dust) and lower costs (due to faster construction). |
